In 1964, at the height of the Cold War, French chanson was steeped in rock'n'roll, twist and yéyés, musical styles devoted to the cult of American culture. Yet Gilbert Bécaud dared to write this ode to Moscow and the USSR of the time: Nathalie became a love song that opened the door to Russia for Westerners. The song became a huge hit, and the French Civil Registry was marked by a flood of Nathalie names given to many little girls. The Bécaud/Delanoë duo composed a new song, La fille de Nathalie, which was released 19 years later, in 1983.
